Liberatory Design Thinking: Design for Justice

How can we leverage the creative power of design thinking as a tool for justice? Come explore a new form of design and systems thinking, Liberatory Design, that accounts for oppression, historical context, complexity and power. We will work through an experiential education challenge to practice the Liberatory Design process. These tools will set you up to practice co-design back home and begin tackling complex equity challenges.

Design for Justice: Rethinking Design Thinking in Practice

Design Thinking is a design-inspired creative process that can be applied in any sector. It's a powerful force for change but can also be exclusive, rife with uneven power dynamics, and an actor in reproducing oppressive outcomes. But what if we could leverage the power of design thinking and systems thinking to create change towards social justice? What if we viewed activists, nurses, teachers, parents and children as designers for social justice? Come learn about the emerging grassroots movement called Equity Design, the designers experimenting on the cutting edge, and the ways we are adapting the process and tools. Tania, a founding member of the Equity Design movement, will be sharing her equity design process, Liberatory Design, in addition to others in the field. No previous knowledge of design thinking required to attend.

Design for Equity in Community Engagements

Through an interactive design challenge, participants will practice a number of tools developed to build equitable partnerships between designers and the communities they work with. The tools explore how to approach a community, build relational trust, recruit co-designers, negotiate power and launch a project. After the challenge, participants will begin planning how to apply these tools to projects they are currently working on.

Design Thinking as Liberatory Design

How can design thinking serve more powerfully as a force for equity? How does approaching design with an equity lens alter the process of the design thinking and open up more liberatory possibilities for the users, and the process and outcomes of design work? How can design thinking address the effects of oppression in education?

This session, a collaboration between the National Equity Project and Stanford d.school K12Lab, will provide opportunities to experience equity-centered design to help tackle these questions for yourself and organization.
